Dr. Gerry Wegner

Dr. Gerry Wegner received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biology from Loyola University of Chicago (1973, 1975) and his doctorate in entomology from the Ohio State University in 1980. His Ph.D. project dealt with insect pests of turfgrass and his side interests included collecting, rearing, and displaying insects. Wegner’s arthropod exhibits have appeared in numerous shows and educational programs, including school resource programs and industry events in Ohio. Wegner worked as a collector and supplier of paper wasps and yellowjackets for use in the preparation of venom dilutions for sting allergy immunotherapy during the years of 1978 through 1980. He worked as staff entomologist and technician for A-1 Pest Control, Columbus, Ohio from 1981 to 1985. He started with Varment Guard Environmental Services, Inc. in 1985 as staff entomologist and pest management sales/service representative. In 1987, Wegner became a co-owner and vice president of Varment Guard and served as technical director, staff entomologist, and integrated pest management consultant until retirement in 2015. Currently, Dr. Gerry Wegner enjoys nature photography with a focus on macrophotography of arthropods, consulting on pest-related issues, participating in industry webinars, performing arthropod identifications via social media, and being active with the Vero Beach Alliance Church.
